Spr S Carlyon came to Gisborne in 1906 and spent 6 years in the Gisborne Defence Cadets as a Sergeant, and also spent some time in the artillery at Westport. Whilst here he was working as a blacksmith in Mr J. J. H. Ormond's factory and at Otoko when the viaduct was being erected.
