  • While researching the Armitage family who are distant cousins I came across Whitfield Armitage 1886-1916 who was killed in action on the Somme. Whitfield was from Waitomo and shipped out as a replacement in early 1916. He had his whole life ahead of him but it was not to be. NZ lost far too many of its finest young men. I dont think we have fully recovered.
    Rest in peace Whitfield - you are not forgotten.
