  • Member of the New Zealand Alpine Club, and member of both the parties to first reach the peak of New Zealand's highest mountains, Mt Darwin in March 1894, and Mt Cook on Christmas Day 1894.

"Jack was a grand companion in the mountains and in camp and on the many long swagging trips we had together. He had a refined manner and a retiring disposition, and, especially in his later life, he never looked for publicity and seldom talked of his mountaineering except to those he felt were really interested." (from New Zealand Alpine Journal, Vol.XV, No.40, June 1953)

John ( known As Jack) enlisted twice for service, once in 1914 and again in 1915, giving slightly different details each time. AWMM
