"On the 29th September 1918, near Bellicourt, Sergeant Cooney, at a critical time, had to take charge of his platoon engaged on forward road work. He successfully conducted his men to a position of security at the assembly point in spite of a very heavy enemy barrage. He showed great ability and set and excellent example of coolness throughout the day in handling his men, whom he frequently had to lead through very heavily shelled areas. This NCO has on previous occasions shown consistently the same qualities." AWMM
