    • Jean Cormack was my grandmother. The first District Native Health Nurse appointed on the East Coast, she visited remote Maori communities on horseback, in order to safeguard their health, and deliver babies. She volunteered and was accepted to join the first group of New Zealand nurses sent to World War One.

She served in Egypt, East Africa, and on hospital ships eg HMHS Oxfordshire, travelling to Malta, Salonika, Southhampton, Le Havre, Bombay, Dar-Es-Salaam in the course of her service.

She was Acting Matron at the clearing station in Lindi for ten months, she was 'mentioned in despatches,' for her tireless work.

There is a chapter on Jean in the book 'Recovery,' Women's Overseas Service in WW1 by Kay Morris Matthews. 'She had few breaks in her five years of service and no medical record on her army file.' On her return she immediately volunteered for service on the quarantine island, Soames Island. 'Jean Cormack was as tough as they get.' Public - Jenny - Direct descendant - 24 April 2019 - https://nzhistory.govt.nz/war/first-world-war-nurses

  • Joan Sutherland Cormack was my Aunt Jean, my mothers aunt, she came with her sister & nephew to visit our home when I was young. I have always wished I could have spent time with her later in my life as I feel she was a very special woman.
