  • VALOUR REWARDED
Sergeant D, J. Crawley, awarded the Military Medal for gallantry in the field at Messincs, is a son of Mr W. Crawley, of Ravensbourne. Sergeant Crawley enlisted at the outbreak of war, and after spending some time in camp at Tahuna Park was not passed by the medical officer on account of a minor injury to one of his legs. He again enlisted, and was successful in passing, leaving with the Mounted Rifles in the Sixth Reinforcements, with the rank of sergeant. On arriving at Egypt and being keen to get to Gallipoli, he handed in his stripes, and was at the evacuation of Gallipoli. He again gained the rank of sergeant, and was drafted into the Pioneer Brigade, and has seen service in the Somme battles and also at Messines. Latest advices state that Sergeant Crawley is N.C.O. gas expert to the Pioneer Battalion. Public - Lorraine M - Researcher - 12 March 2016 - Southland Times , Issue 17703, 6 July 1917, Page 7
