      Private W. E. Dowden, son of Mr. R. R. Dowden, of Birkenhead, who was recently awarded the Military Medal, left New Zealand in February, 1916, with the Mounted Rifles. After reaching Egypt he was transferred to the infantry, and went to France, where he was again transferred to the machine-gun section. He has been wounded once, and is now at the base Codford. (from an article on Military Medal winners entitled 'A Birkenhead Soldier', Auckland Weekly News, 4 October 1917, p. 19) AWMM

    Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force in France, 20 May 1916.

    Posted to strength, 2nd NZ Machine Gun Corps, in the field, 27 September 1916.
    Wounded in action, 8 June 1917 (gun shot wound, back), and admitted to 77th Field Ambulance; transferred same day to No 1 NZ Field Ambulance; rejoined unit, 13 June 1917.

    Admitted to No 3 NZ Field Ambulance, 16 June 1917 (ICT arm); rejoined unit, in the field, 21 June 1917.
    Awarded Military Medal for acts of gallantry in the field.

    Accidentally injured, 7 December 1917 (contusion, right knee: 'during the advance this man was helping with a heavy tripod. He fell into a trench, the tripod falling him, causing his injuries. He carried on for two days but had to give up. Not to blame.'
    Killed in action, 19 February 1918.
