      Awarded, and promulgated, 'London Gazette', 4 January 1917. - 'Lieut. Cuthill, Lewis Machine Gun Officer, 2nd Otago Battalion, was present during the advance of the Switch Trench, on the morning of the 15th September. He had carefully studied the ground previously and had instrcted his N.C.O.s as to positions for siting the guns. He was on the left flank, which was open to the enemy, and was wounded at the Crest Trench. This officer has done continual good work since landing in France, and has displayed conspicuous gallantry on several occasions during heavy enemy fire at Armentieres.' AWMM
