- Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (CBE) AWMM
Citation for Distinguished Conduct Medal (DCM): "(France Nov 1917-Mar 1918). For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He has shown untiring energy in performing the responsible duties of his position, and in action his fine courage and resource have been examples to the men. On one occasion, when all the runners had become casualties, he himself, though wounded, collected the reports from three companies and brought them to headquarters, and then devoted himself to assisting and attending the wounded. In difficult trench-work, when the company was short of experienced officers, his ability and initiative were of the greatest service." Biographical information
Leonard Daniell was the son of C.E. Daniell. In 1924 he married Constance Free the daughter of S.L.P. Free. They had five sons and one daughter (Family Source May 2015).
Daniell was educated at Wellington College.
He served for four years with the New Zealand Rifle Brigade, receiving the DCM for his actions in France. He was Commissioned 2nd Lieutenant on 3 February 1919, and returned to New Zealand on 25 April 1919. He was posted to Reserves on 22 May 1919, and relinquished his commission in 1920. He later received the CBE.
He served as Masterton County Clerk for six years, and then with the Wellington Land Board. He was an active member of the Farmers' Union and wrote many articles on farm economics. AWMM
