  • My grandfather fought from 1915 1-1918 in the New Zealand Rifles. He was Belgian and spoke very little English. I understand his main motivation was not fighting the Germans but to visit his half sister in Belgium. Orphaned at six years of age he didn't have much to keep him in Belgium. He managed to visit his sister in Adinkerke, Belgium twice whilst serving but chose to return to New Zealand in 1919. I'm very pround of his contirubtion. He must have been brave to return and then fight amongst people who spoke another language. Many of his fellow soldiers were probably suspicious of this foreign speaking soldier yet he persevered and served in the NZ Rifles for the duration of the war.
