James Malcolm Duncan was born Rangiora, Canterbury on 28 Oct 1869 to Irish immigrants Malcolm (Skipper) Duncan and his wife Mary Jane nee Deigan. He grew up on the family farm and farming was his occupation when on 18 Jan 1901 at the age of 31, he enlisted to serve in the Boer War. He served until May 1902 and then returned to farming. On 7 Dec 1914 he enlisted again stating his birth year was 1874 to appear only 40 instead of 45. On enlistment it was noted he was 5ft 61/2, 157 lbs, dark complexion, brown eyes, dark & grey hair, Roman Catholic. Training took place in Trentham in January of 1915 and he left NZ on 14 Feb 1915 bound for Egypt. He went missing, believed dead at Gallipoli in August of that year and his name is listed on the Hill 60 Memorial. A brave Uncle who served in two wars and will never be forgotten.
