He spent the next nine months working at the New Zealand Auxiliary Hospital at Moascar and the NZGH at Cairo. (Church, p. 76)In June 1916 he was posted to England and left Alexandria on board the Dover Castle bound for Southampton. By June he was staff at No.1 NZGH, Brockenhurst. (Church, p. 77)"On 29 may William Duncan left for France for duties in the Field at Messines. He received a second accolade on 7 August when he was brought to the notice of the Secretary of State for war 'for valuable services rendered in connection with the War.'"(Church, p. 77)William Duncan contracted influenza, which developed into tubercular meningitis, and was transferred to the Royal Victoria Hospital at Netley where he he died.The Auckland Museum Library's manuscripts collection contains a war memoir by Raymond Danvers Baker that contains a possible mention of William Duncan.
