When Ted Dunn left Sydney in about 1909 for New Zealand to find work in gold mining, his baby sister (my mother) was either not yet born or an infant. Ted spent some years working in the mines in Waihi on the Bay of Plenty from where he joined the New Zealand Expeditionary Forces. Having spent some time in the NZE Tunnelling Company leading up to the Battle of Arras, he was back with the Rifle Brigade at the time of his death on this day, 7th June 1917, 100 years ago. As his nephew, I was privileged to have visited the place of his death and the New Zealand War Memorial (where his name appears) in Mesen a few years ago. On 28th June 1917, I plan to be present in Waihi for unveiling of a statue at the Tunnellers' Memorial. He never married and had no children. Let us hope his sacrifice and that of his comrades is never forgotten. Stephen Beaumont
