    DEATH OF C H FINLAYSON
One of the best-known farmers in the Whangarei District, Mr C H (Charlie) Finlayson died in Whangarei Hospital yesterday at the age of 62. A son of the late Mr Angus Finlayson he was born on the family property at Purua, eventually taking over part of the farm which he improved and lived on all his life. He enlisted for overseas service shortly after the outbreak of WW1 and went away with the main body mounted rifles taking part in most of the action in the Middle East campaign. Mr Finlayson was commissioned overseas and was on furlough back in NZ when the armistice was signed.
    STOCK BREEDING
On demobilisation he returned to the farm and after his marriage, he started on the progressive breeding of sheep and beef cattle and later went in for dairy farming as well.
In the early years of WW2 Mr Finlayson was active in the formation of the Independent Mounted Rifles, and commanded the unit for most of its career.
His love for horses kept his name in the forefront of show rings and jumping competitions throughout Northland. This equine interest was also extended to the Whangarei Racing Club. Mr Finlayson was most active in its affairs for many years as the committeeman and 2 or 3 years ago the club showed its appreciation of his work and honoured him with a life membership.
    INTEREST IN DOG TRIALS
Another of his special outdoor interests up to a few years ago was that of dog trials in which he and his dogs competed throughout Northland. Apart from Hall and School committeework in the Purua district, Mr Finlayson did not enter public life. During the depression, he organized a company known as Cheaper Mutton Ltd with shops in Whangarei. Mr Finlayson is survived by his wife and three sons. • To my Grandfather Charles Hauptmann Finlayson whom I just missed out on meeting before he died in 1958, I wish to make a tribute to you and your horse Nugget for being so brave and fighting to liberate our free world. Not a day goes by when we are not grateful for your duty and although we can only imagine the horror you went through, the sacrifices you made for our country are historic. Thankyou my Poppa xxx
