  • George Gardiner was the son of Karehana and Rewa Gardiner of Tauranga, New Zealand.

Husband of Mary Gardiner. Father of Darcy Herbert Gardiner (WW2 800706)

Promoted from the ranks to Second Lieutenant on 29 February 1918 (Studholme 1928).

Quartermaster of Canterbury Mounted Rifles (Studholme 1928).

Died from acute peritonitis following a gun shot wound to the abdomen in 1941.

There is some confusion as to the exact date of George Gardiner's birth. His second enlistment in the Australian Army notes his date of birth as 3 August 1903. However, his original enlistment details in the New Zealand Army gives it as 1 February 1894. The New Zealand Birth, Death and Marriage Indexes do not show a birth for 1894 but do for 1902. Therefore, his true age at the time of his death is either 37 or 47, but unlikely to be 43 as officially recorded. Next of kin details compiled from information in the Casualty lists published in the newspapers. AWMM

Just encountered George's site while researching the Serbian award of Cross
of Karageorge. My grand uncle, who served with the New Zealand Engineers,
was also awarded this decoration in 1916. Not forgotten.
