  • BOP Beacon, Vol 13 9-2-1949, Pg 4
The death on Feb 2 of Mr T, Garlick at the comparatively early age of 57 removes one of Taneatua’s early identities. Coming to “Puketi farm with his late parents at an early age. Mr Garlick, with the exception of 4 1/2yrs at WWI, spent all his life in the district.
As a young man he was a prominent footballer, having represented BOP on several occasions, an old 4th Waikato he joined up for service at the outbreak of hostilities in 1914 & served on Gallipoli & in the Middle East throughout the campaign. Submarined while going from Lemnos to Marseilles on the hospital ship “Transylvania” he, with others, was picked up by Italian rescue boats & landed in Italy. Always a good horseman he won a medal for wrestling on • horseback against the pick of Empire troops while in Egypt. Returning to NZ in 1919, married in 1920 L A Woods, whom he had met in England

  • Obituary Continued
His forthright Character and happy disposition made him many friends. The large & representative gathering at the graveside of old soldier comrades from far & near, & local friends who came to pay tribute to him, bore testimony of the respect which Mr Garlick was widely regarded. Returned servicemen formed a guard of honour, & most impressive was the filing past of his ex-service comrades who dropped their poppies into the open grave.
Mr Garlick leaves a widow, one daughter, Binda of London & 2 sons Bill, Palmerston North & John, Rotorua. Mrs Bidois, Te Whaiti, & Mrs Bennett, Taneatua, are sisters, Messrs R. Garlick Rotorua, J. Garlick, Taneatua, brothers.
