  • Herbert Edmondson's parents were Eliza Ann Edmondson (nee Sigley) and Thomas Edmondson. He was their sixth child.

He marched into Sling Camp with the Wellington Infantry Regiment on 9 January 1918, and joined the Otago Infantry Regiment the next day. He left Sling Camp for France with the Otago Infantry Regiment on 20 March 1918.

He marched into camp at Etaples, France with the New Zealand Infantry and General Base Depot on 24 March 1918. He joined the New Zealand Entrenching Battalion on 30 March 1918 and was posted to Bois, France.

On or around 16 April was reported missing; on 19 May 1918, a Court of Inquiry found him to be "missing" "believed prisoner".

There is some uncertainty surrounding his death. He was believed to be a Prisoner of War in a German location. Two communications (28 April 1919 and 2 July 1919) state he died as a POW, cause, date, and place of death unknown. A Court of Inquiry declared him dead 8 May 1919, cause, date, and place unknown. However, it is also noted in his record that he died of "inflammation of [the] lungs" (pneumonia) as the Prisoner of War Hospital, Montignay, France on 28 June 1918. He is listed as "Died of disease, Germany x France, 28/6/18" in the Roll of Honour.

Died as a POW (POWs were virtually unknown in the First World War).

His mother was sent a British Commonwealth Memorial Plaque and Scroll. AWMM
