  • Alfred Edward Gilbert was my grandfather and lived his adult life in Takapuna after the war. He was married to Gladys Mary ( nee Lloyd) and had four children; Ngairie (deceased), Gwen, Garth and Edward (Ted also deceased) and I am Ted's younger daughter. He was known as 'Gill' to the family. He went to the war aged 26 and had his family relatively late in life, fathering Ted in his 40s which was late at the time. He was awarded 3 medals for his service in WW 1. He fought at Gallipoli and was medivacced out with dysentery. Thereafter he was returned to fight in the Somme when he was shot in the shoulder and spent his final service back in the UK in supplied before returning to NZ. I have all the dates somewhere but he never spoke about the war at all with the family like so many who served, so much remains a mystery about him to me.
