The following consoling letter concerning the death of her son has been received by Mrs C. F. Edwards of Bayley road, Gisborne, under date France, October 8, 1918: —I am sorry to have to tell you of the death of your son, Private J. H. Edwards, who was killed in action during the operations in the vicinity of Cambrai. He and another signaller were engaged in repairing a break in the telephone line when a shell came and caught both of the lads. Yours was a fine boy, and at the time of his death he was in charge of a section of company signallers. As the signal officer of this battalion I always found him a good reliable man, and his coolness under fire was always an inspiring example to his mates. Our padre paid him the last solemn rites, and gave your boy a Christian burial in a British cemetery near the village of Marsiernes. I trust you will accept my expression of sympathy, for I know your loss. Kindly take comfort in the assurance that your boy gave his life because he loved his people, and died to save them from the tyranny of an unfeeling foe. Believe me, Yours sincerely (signed), G. C. Laws, Lieut. Public - Lorraine Mona - Researcher - 14 May 2023 - POVERTY BAY HERALD, VOLUME XLV, ISSUE 14788, 16 DECEMBER 1918, PAGE 6
