    • His father was named Andrew Graham. AWMM
    • 9 July 1917 - RETURNED FROM THE FRONT.
Four more Gisborne soldiers returned home yesterday, coming from. Auckland by the SS Arahura Their names are: Sergt Major W Graham Corporal W Bailey, Privates M. R Walters and W J Foster They were met by Messrs R M Birrell, and A H Wallis, on behalf of the Defence Committee, and Mr J B Erskine secretary of the Returned Soldiers' Association.

Sergt Major W Graham who was sheep-farming at Rakauroa left Gisborne with the seventh Mounteds, and was attached to the Otago Mounted Rifles. While in Egvpt his squadron were on patrol-dutv and they were there when the evacuation of Gallipoli was decided on. The squadron was then split up, the Gisbornite along with others was drafted into the Pioneers. They were amongst the first of the New Zealanders to go to France. At Armentieres and the Somme Sergt Major Graham’s company was engaged principally in engineering work such as trench making, construction of communication saps and, consolidation, particularly at the Somme, where they had to follow up the waves of infantry. While thus engaged in September last the company suffered severely being exposed to the enemy shell fire. Sergt-Major Graham states that the casualties would have been greater but for the fact that the ground was soft, and the high explosive shells embedded themselves before exploding. Had Fritz used shrapnel instead of high explosives he probably would accounted for the whole company. While, the Gisbornite was making out a casualty list a shell exploded alongside of him, and the concussion threw him some distance away. Shortly, afterward while in a sap, he became partially buried through a shell breaking the side of the trench. After a few days at the rest camp, Sergt Major Graham returned to duty, and afterwards went to Armentieres when the New Zealanders shifted back there. The effects of the shell concussion, however, became worse, and he was sent to hospital in England. Whilst on furlough prior to leaving for New Zealand Sergt Major Graham visited friends and relatives in Scotland. He expects to leave this week for Rotorua for further treatment.
