Mabel was in the 1919 Electoral Roll for Auckland East, Nurses Club, Mountain Road listed as a spinster. 1920 NZ Gazette of registered nurses Mabel listed as staying at the Nurses Club East Auckland and registered as Mabel Gertrude Gray.

In 1922 list of registered nurses she is called by the married name McKay and her address is given as Mt Albert, Auckland. Mabel is listed in the list of registered nurses in the NZ Govt Gazette 1923, 1924, 1925 & 1933 as Mabel Gertrude McKay(Gray). There is no proof that Mabel married a McKay. Seems there was confusion between Mabel Gray and Nurse Mary Gray who married John McKay, 1921, lived in Mt Albert, Auckland. This error seems to have been repeated in the NZ Govt Gazette and copied onto other records.

Mabel left Auckland on the Niagara on 26 August 1920, bound for Honolulu. She arrived on 5 September 1920. On the passenger records Mabel gave her address as C/- the Nurses Club, Wellington, New Zealand. On 26 January 1921 she sailed from Honolulu on the Maui for San Francisco. She arrived on 1 Feb 1921 at San Francisco with her last residence being stated as Hawaii. She left Honolulu on 26 June 1921 bound for San Francisco on the ship Maui. The passenger list describes her as aged 34, born in Nelson, New Zealand and of "Scottish ethnicity." Her last permanent address before boarding the ship was given as Honolulu Mabel's stepfather Harrison Cowman in the official statement on the probate file relating to his late wife Clara Cowman in January 1930 stated that her daughter Mabel was Mrs Mabel Gertrude Wilson . Canadian immigration records of October 1923 show that Mabel had married an American and gained American citizenship through him. Her American address was given as 17 Beekman Place, Manhattan, New York. However when Mabel moved to Montreal to seek work as a nurse the immigration form stated that her intended address was the YWCA in Montreal, the "total value of her effects" was £150 and that she was a widow.

Mabel was researched by Kay Switzer of the NZ Society of Genealogists Nelson Branch for the book All Guts No glory Nelson Tasman Nurses and Chaplains of WW1 see page 151. AWMM
