  • Charles Pryor Greaves was born in Lincoln, Canterbury, the youngest of fourteen children born to William Greaves and Eliza Mary Prior. Charles enlisted with the Canterbury Infantry Battalion on 21 August 1914 shortly after war was declared and embarked with the Main Body to Egypt. He landed at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915. Charles was wounded in action on 5 June 1915 but remained on duty. On 14 June he was promoted to Lance Corporal. On 7 August during the Battle for Sari Bair, he was shot through the left heel and was admitted to the hospital ship ‘Delta’. On 11 August he was admitted to the 1st Australian General Hospital, Cairo, and discharged to duty at Zeitoun a week later. Charles was invalided home on 25 September 1915, sailing on S.S. Willochra. On 12 April 1916 he was discharged from duty on account of wounds received in action. Source: Military Personnel File
