    • Private Owen Leonard Haase : NZEF Service # (2) : 6/1151 & 8/3454 : Last rank/unit served : Private, Canterbury Infantry Regiment, 1st Battalion, 12th (Nelson) Company, 8th Reinforcements, NZEF. Born 14 May 1892 - at Okaramio - (Rai Valley District) - Marlborough Region. Son of Otto & Emma Haase - of Takaka, Tasman - and later 42 School Lane, Upper Riccarton, Christchurch. Prior to enlistment for war service Owen Haase was employed as a Stable keeper/Driver - at his father Otto Haase's farm - at Takaka, Tasman. Owen Haase enlisted for war service - 14 August 1914 - at Nelson. At enlistment he was posted as a Private with the Otago Infantry Regiment, Main Body NZEF. Private Owen Haase embarked for overseas war service - twice. 1) 16 October 1914 - with the Main Body NZEF - aboard HMNZ Transport Ship 'Willochra' - to Suez, Egypt. 2) 13 November 1915 - with the Canterbury Infantry Regiment, 8th Reinforcements, NZEF - for Egypt. On 9 June 1915 Private Haase was medically invalided (sick) from Egypt to New Zealand. On 16 September 1915 he was assessed by a NZEF Medical Board - at Nelson - and he was passed fit to resume war service. On 13 November 1915 Private Haase, again, embarked from New Zealand - for overseas war service. He disembarked from his transport ship at Egypt - where on 18 January 1916 he re-joined his unit the 12th (Nelson) Company, of the Canterbury Infantry Regiment at Ismailia, Egypt. In April 1916 Private Haase embarked from Port Alexandria, Egypt, for the battle fields of the Western Front (Europe). Private Haase served at France (1916) until he was killed in action - 16 September 1916 - at the Somme, France aged 25 years. Private Owen Leonard Haase has no known grave at France - but he is commemorated on the Caterpillar Valley (New Zealand) Memorial to the Missing, Caterpillar Valley Cemetery, Longueval, France Public - Jenifer - Researcher - 21 April 2018 - Military File
