  • The story we have been told through our branch of the family is that James served in the Boer War and returned home with no intention of ever being involved in warfare again. When the call came for volunteers we were told that James let it be known he had done his share. Then the NZ (govt / army?) sent someone, or a delegation, to try and coax James to return to service. That his service had been so well recognized in the Boer War that his input was specially requested says a lot personally.

  • Born at Waverley, South Taranaki in 1876. Occupation sheep and cattle farmer. Parents pioneer farmers Peter and Ann Elmslie of "Hillside" Waverley. Jim married Martha Jean Hamilton of Sydney Australia in 1914 (no children). He fought with distinction in the Boer War and at Gallipoli. He was killed in action rallying his men on the top of Chunuk Bair Gallipoli on 9th August 1915 and was buried with Major Chambers at Old No3 Post. Jim was greatly respected and loved by his men who thought the world of him. He performed three distinct acts of gallantry at Gallipoli and was recommended for a posthumous Victoria Cross by his CO, but it was not awarded, as it was against British policy for a Major to receive a VC. Mentioned in dispatches 1916. Remembered in this centennial year (and always) by his many great nephews and nieces. A great New Zealander.
