  • A Grandfather I never knew, was wounded at Gallipoli at Chunuk Bair in the very early stages of attacks, returned to UK where he lost his lower leg due to his injuries, sometime later the rest was taken off to the hip due to infection. There is a photo of him with one of his mates in the NZ Army museum in the Medical section taken as they were recuperating in England We have been told Granddad was instrumental in setting up the artificial limb center at CHCH Hospital. He used a fixed wheel bike to ride out to the paddocks across from the Peg Hotel in Belfast CHCH were he lived, to cut willows to carve out the limbs. Three of us from the family have served as a result of him. My Father RNZE ,me RNZMP, RNZAMC, and my son RNZAF, FP' MP.
