  • I well remember Granddad Arthur and Nana Mabel Jane (nee Parris). and that spoilt rotten terrier Phillys who was the boss. We used to go over the hill from Petone to visit them when granddad worked on the Rimutaka tunnel and they lived in the old Japanese P.O.W. camp at Taherenikau which was still pretty much intact and had been taken over by the ministry of works as a workers camp. There is these days nothing there to suggest that there ever was a camp there.Except for the memorial opposite where the main gate used to be. Of historical interest is the fact that there was at one stage a mutiny by Japanese officers who refused to work.As a result some one fired a shot and in the ensuing confusion I believe that somewhere in the vicinity os 40 odd Japanese and one kiwi Guard were killed..

  • Arthur was the brother of my grandmother Jean Robertson nee Hawthorn, he also married a lady called Jean. He worked on the Karapiro Hydro Scheme with my grandfather Archie and I believe he also worked on the railway tunnels south of Kaikoura, my hometown. My mother used to tell me lots of stories about Uncle Arthur as the families had a lot to do with each other. Lest we forget

  • Have visited the tunnels at Arras in France where Arthur served. What a feat by the kiwis involved in extending them.
