  • '' On 7 August, exactly a century after his great uncle died, Paul Duckworth, 57, will stand under his oak tree, recalling that sacrifice. The tree, though, has not been neglected these last 93 years. It is looked after by the cemetery’s head gardener, Suleyman Sevinc, who prunes it once a year. His father had the same job, and before that his grandfather, who began caring for the oak in the Thirties. “I’m proud of my work,” he says. “In every country, there are good and bad people. I don’t think about their nationality, I consider what kind of person they were. “It was Ataturk who said, ‘After losing their lives on this land, they have become our sons as well.’ We’re the young ones now, so they are all our grandfathers.” (Adapted from an article in the 'Daily Telegraph'). I think the same for my great grandfather's nephew's sacrifice of his life

  • You and many other of our family members and my ancestors fought in WW1. Your willingness and courage to fight for your country is what has made both our lands so special. I have only found out about our New Zealand branch of the family since undertaking my family tree. My family " will remember you all". Elizabeth, Sydney, Australia
