  • Herman is my uncle and had to change his name to Jardine so he could fight for his country. He wrote a letter to his father apologising for his poor behaviour while in camp but promised that ‘if I die you won’t find a bullet in my back’. They didn’t hear from him again. He died at Chunuk Bair
    He was a much loved and remembered brother to my father Jim Gardiner
