Today's list of casualties contains the name of' Private William T Farquhar (Otago Battalion), who is reported to have died of wounds. Private Farquhar, who was 28 years of age, left Gisborne with the fifth reinforcements, and was subsequently transferred to the Otago Battalion of the fourth reinforcements, along with several others. Prior to enlisting he had been a member of the local post and telegraph staff for over three years, and was a popular and highly respected officer. He was also a prominent hockey player, having been included in several representative teams, including the Poverty Bay team that visited Hamilton last year. He was captain of the Civil Service hockey and cricket .teams. Private Farquhar was an Otago boy, being a son of Mr James Lamb Farquhar, of Blackstones Hill, Otago. Of the fifteen or sixteen members of the local post and telegraph staff who have gone to the front, Private Farquhar is the first to have lost his life Public - Lorraine Mona - Researcher - 15 May 2023 - POVERTY BAY HERALD, VOLUME XLII, ISSUE 13769, 23 AUGUST 1915, PAGE 4
