  • William Alexander Farquharson was my great Uncle. He was my grandfather James Hamilton Farquharson's brother. Like all of the Farquharson boys William (Billy) was a gentle giant, (they were all well over 6'), piercing blue eyes and always humming or whistling, always impeccably turned out. They were a deeply Christian family and belonged to the Presbytarian Church in Port Chalmers, a very hospitable family and very musical. He was shot apparently by a sniper in the last few days of the war when they were fighting up near a forest near the Belgian/France border, and some days later died of those wounds in a field hospital. He is buried in Chaudry British War Cemetery, France. My grandchildren can take turns wearing his great war medal on ANZAC Day in his memory and understand what he sacrificed for us.
