    Harry Johnson recalled that 4 of his sons served in WW1 - Henry George Johnson (38540); Herbert Arthur Johnson DCM, MM (12/3062), James Johnson (13/2821). Other sons may have been Reserves.

    Found guilty, Ismailia, 29 January 1916, of drunkenness and creating a disturbance in the NZ&A Divisional Headquarters at 10 pm: awarded 168 hours' Field Punishment No 2, and forfeiture of 14 days' ordinary pay; forfeited 6 days' pay by Royal Warrant.
    Found guilty, Moascar, 9 February 1916, of being absent from camp while undergoing Field Punishment No 2: awarded 108 hours' detention, and forfeited 14 days' ordinary pay.
    Embarked to join the British Expeditionary Force, France, 6 April 1916.
    Found guilty, Armentieres, 27 May 1916, of being absent from fatigue party: awarded 14 days' Field Punishment No 2, and forfeited 14 days' ordinary pay.
    Found guilty, 10 September 1916, of drunkennes: awarded 14 days' Field Punishment No 2, and forfeited 14 days' ordinary pay.
    Wounded in action, 29 September 1916 (gun shot wound, left hand); transferred to England, and admitted to 2nd Birmingham War Hospital, 4 October 1916; transferred to No 2 NZ General Hospital, Walton-on-Thmaes, 8 November 1916; discharged on leave, 9 November 1916.
    Marched in to NZ Command Depot, Codford.
    Awarded Military Medal.
    Admitted to Tidworth Military Isolation Hospital, 11 January 1917 (measles: slight); discharged, 22 January 1917, and marched in to NZ Command Depot, Codford.
    Found guilty, Codford, 18 February 1917, of resisting arrest and strking an NCO of the Military Police: awarded 28 days' detention.
    Posted to 3rd Bn, Auckland Infantry Regiment, 25 April 1917.
    Proceeded overseas to France, 28 May 1917.
    Found guilty, 24 June 1917, of being out of camp area without a pass: awarded 72 hours' detention.
    Wounded in action, 22 November 1917 (gassed: mild), and admitted to 10th Casualty Clearing Station; transferred to 22nd General Hospital, Camiers, 27 November 1917; to England, 5 December 1917, and admitted to Military Hospital, Fulham, 11 December 1917 (diarrhoea); transferred to NZ Convalescent Hospital, Hornchurch, 18 December 1917.
    Found guilty, Hornchurch, 24 January 1918, of (1)drunkenness; (2) breaking out of Isolation, 21 January 1918: fined 10/-.
    Awarded Distinguished Conduct Medal.
    Attached on strength, NZ Command Depot, Codford, 16 March 1918.
    Transferred to NZ Machine Gun Corps, Grantham, 16 April 1918.
    Proceeded overseas to France, 3 June 1918; joined NZ Machine Gun Bn, 21 September 1918, and posted to A Company.
    Found guilty, 30 December 1918, of (1) drunkenness; (2) discharging firearms in a public place; (3) assaulting a civilian: awarded 28 days' Field Punishment No 2, and forfeited 28 days' pay.
    Found guilty, 4 February 1919, of drunkenness: fined 10/- and awarded 14 days' Field Punishment No 2.
    Commenced return to New Zealand from Southampton on board HT 'Willochra', 15 April 1919; disembarked Wellington, 15 April 1919; discharged (termination of period of engagement), 13 May 1919.

  • I remember meeting you when I was a little girl. You were in hospital and you gave a cane bottle which you had made in hospital. I still have that bottle today, it must be over 40 years old now. You didn't have any legs but I remember you as a very good looking man and quite strongly built. I will always treasure that little gift you gave me. Arohanui my uncle may you rest in peace.
