"On leaving school joined the staff of the Union Bank at Hunterville, and was afterwards transferred to Hamilton and Dargaville, holding the position of accountant at the latter office. He always took a keen interest in military matters, and attained the rank of Colour-Sergeant in the Senior Cadets. Entering the N.C.O.'s Camp at Trentham in January, 1917, he left with the 28th Reinforcements as Sergeant, and after only a short stay in Sling Camp was sent to France, where he joined the Auckland Regiment. He was killed on the evening of August 25th, 1918, by the explosion of a 5.9 shell, which landed in his trench, killing all the occupants, and was buried at Grevallers, two miles west of Bapaume."
