Hugh Aled Jones
My father, Alan Aled Jones (1921-2008) was the younger son of Hugh Aled Jones. Dad said of his father: "He was too short to enlist for war service, but he got into the medical corps and ran the Hospital Office in both Cairo and Brockenhurst in England, rising to the highest non-commissioned rank of Sergeant Major, being mentioned in dispatches more than once for efficient work". My grandfather had come to NZ from England in 1913 on an assisted passage. Although he had a clerical background, he was to join a rabbiters’ gang. He’d arrived in Wellington, taken the train to Taumaranui and had directions to make his way to the tented camp with his swag. I asked Dad: "What possessed your father to emigrate?". The answer: "Adventure!" He went from rabbiting to sole charge teacher at a one room school in the King Country to eventually Head of the Commerce Department at Seddon Tech (now AUT).
