    One of the 50 Tūhoe soldiers who fought in WW1. Patuheuheu. Pvt. World War 1, 1914-1918, sn.16/626, 2nd Māori Contingent, A Company, embarked on 18-Sept-1915 for Suez Egypt. Age 22Y when he enlisted in 1915, wounded June 1916 and Nov 1918. Awarded British War medal and Victory Medal. Next of kin - Te Kahukiwa (father), Waiohau, Kopuriki. Labourer, b. 1893 Te Houhi, dcd 29-Jan-1954 in Rotorua (Charles Timutimu Research Project).

    Urewera Lands Consolidation Scheme (Report of Commissioners as to position of). Appendix to the Journals of the House of Representatives, 1924 Session I, G-07."At a sitting of the Commission at Ruatoki in April last it was stated that a number of the Urewera Natives sold their lands prior to enlisting for the war; those who returned now find themselves landless, and they ask that the Crown give them land so that they may not be a burden on the members of their families." Kahukiwa was listed as one of these men. AWMM
