  • Selwyn Frederick Fendall 1894-1916 was my uncle. Of course we never met but I have his picture above my desk. He is an inspiration for me to research family history and especially remember those who lost their lives. Selwyn could have been sent home after Gallipoli where he was wounded and shell shocked. But after recovering in hospital he transferred from the mounted rifles to the artillery because he felt he hadnt " done enough ". He served on the Somme in 1916 in chest deep mud and filth and contracted enteric fever. Despite the fact that he was physically in great shape when he enlisted he died in Brockenhurst hospital just 17 days short of his 22nd birthday. What a terrible waste of a young life.
Rest in peace Selwyn -you will always be remembered.
