  • Departed Alofi, Niue Island on 14 October 1915 on board SS Te Anau (Pointer 2000, p. 13).

Arrived Devonport, Auckland, New Zealand on 19 October 1915 (Pointer 2000, p. 18).

Sailed from Port Said, Egypt, to Marseilles, France, on board SS Canada on 9 April 1916. (Pointer 2000, p. 172)

His name is in the Register of Burials in the Parish of Hornchurch, Essex, 1916, No. 1350, p. 169.

"16/1071 Private Lavaika of Alofi and his brother 16/1047 Private Finiki and 16/1046 Private Filitoua of Makefu would have been unaware of the departure on 17 June of the first group of 40 men returning to New Zealand. Two days later Filitoua died and the Reverend Evans [Rev. J. Benson Evans] was called in yet again to conduct a burial service for a Niuean." (Pointer 2000, p. 50)

Because of a shortage of space in the churchyard, they lie in a shared grave. (Pointer 2000, p. 183 n16)

Although the headstone of Private Filitoua records his age as being 22 years at the time of his death, the Hornchurch Burial Register records it as 17 years. He was buried on 21 June 1916.

Name mispelt as Filitona by the Auckland Weekly News 1916 AWMM
