  • This was my Grandfather who I had a great relationship with and loved the stories he told me of his youth, a bygone age. At age 13 he left school and became an apprentice cobbler. However he was not fully happy with that so at night studied accountancy and eventually qualified. He served in the war as a medic because he was a conscientious objector. He married his wife, Maude, with whom he had one son, Neil, my Dad. Maude died several years before him but he did not waste his last years, he was very active in his local Church, he had a strong Christian faith and this made him continue very involved socially. The final year or two he became very frail but his mind stayed crystal clear. He was still able to drive his car right to the end. He died peacefully while taking his afternoon nap on the couch. No autopsy was done, it was common then to simply ascribe someone's death to old age.
