“For gallantry and devotion to duty on operations on the British front East of REBUTERNE from 14th to 16th August 1918. During operations on SEERE RIDGE, Captain Lumley was in command of a light trench mortar battery and was for the time being without other Officers from the Battery. He personally led his battery into action and kept in constant touch with the attacking infantry. On the infantry being held up by heavy hostile machine gun fire, he directed the fire of two of his gun teams onto the machine gun nests and thus enabled the advance of the Infantry to proceed. During the period consolidation, Captain Lumley personally reconnoitred for all his gun positions and immediately registered on S.O.S lines. The operations were carried out under heavy shell fire and machine gun fire, Captain Lumley by his keen foresight, tireless energy and gallant conduct greatly attributed towards the success of the operations and set an inspiring example to all”.
