Leave a tribute or memory of
William Edward McCarthy
My grandfather George McLaren (12/2419) was a corporal in the Auckland Infantry Battalion alongside William McCarthy during the Battle of the Somme. George notes Pte McCarthy's death in his war diary as such:
Public - Steven - Researcher - 5 July 2018
"Saturday 23rd of September 1916 - Had another night in the Huns dugout last night. Its is a lovely day today and the ground is drying up a lot. Our guns are going hot today. At 2PM all hands were on fatigue cleaning the mud off roads, finished at 5PM. While we were having tea the Huns shelled us and poor old McCarthy got killed, another of old No 9 section gone, he was blown to bits ten yards from me, also two other chaps".
Rest in peace, William McCarthy.
