Married in England just before returning to New Zealand. They both travelled on the Athenic leaving England 14th July 1919.
Enlisted with the Royal Australian Navy under his real name McGlinn in 1919; deserted from the HMS Cerebos at Melbourne July 1914 was caught, deserted again and was caught and served his sentence; he then enlisted in NZEF as McDonald which he confessed to in February 1917, and was later corrected on the Service Record to McGlinn.
He attested with a birth date of 26 August 1889, four years older than he actually was. Baptised as a Catholic, attested as a Presbyterian. He was detained on several occasions for disobedience, missing parade, absence without leave. AWMM
