    • Embarked Egypt to join the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force, Gallipoli, 9 May 1915.
      Wounded in action, 20 May 1915 (shrapnel wound, hand); returned to duty same day.
      Wounded in action (second occasion), 8 August 1915 (gun shot wound, left shoulder), and admitted to 40th Field Ambulance; transferred to Casualty Clearing Station, Mudros, 22 August 1915; discharged to duty, 12 September 1915.
      Admitted to Casualty Clearing Station, Mudros, 12 September 1915 (enteritis); transferred to Convalescent Camp, 5 October 1915; returned to duty, 6 October 1915.
      Returned to Egypt, 30 October 1915; attached to strength of Mustapha Base, Alexandria, 3 November 1915.
      Left for Canal Zone, 23 January 1916.
      Reported Missing, 3 August 1916, believed to be Prisoner of War.
      Officially reported a Prisoner of War, interned at Noussaybia, 1 March 1918.
      Circumstances of capture entered on file: 'Lt. Allsop was sent out to Abu Ramel Aug. 3rd i/c of a patrol of which Tpr McLennan was a member. It was arranged that in the event of anything going wrong, he was to fall back on Had El Enna, where there [were]Light Horse outposts. Telephone communication was maintained with the Patrol till about 2200 that night. Firing began about 2300 & went on all night. Another patrol was sent out but could not get in touch with Lt. Allsop. his patrol did not return. On Aug 5th the ground was searched. Traces of 2 enemy columns could be seen. At Aghratina a board was found on which was written: "Lieut Allsop A.M.R. a gentleman, now a P. of W. has eaten in our battery." Pris. of War in the hands of the Turks.'
      Repatriated from Tueky, and arrived Alexandria, 11 December 1918, and admitted to 87th General Hospital (malaria); transferred to Aotea Convalescent Home, Heliopolis, 29 December 1918; discharged to NZ Base, 12 February 1919.
      Commenced return to New Zealand from Suez on board HMNZT 'Kaikoura', 6 March 1919; admitted to ship's hospital, at sea, 14 March 1919 (malaria); discharged to duty, 19 March 1919; discharged (no longer physically fit for War Service on account of illness contracted on Active Service: malaria), 11 November 1919.
      War service: 5 years 90 days (of which 4 years 186 days were abroad) AWMM
    • He was the son of Donald Campbell & Margaret ‘Peggy’ McLennan (nee McGregor), from Waipu. They had nine children and their two youngest sons enlisted with the NZEF – John Campbell (13/324) and John McGregor (33585).
