  • Reputed to have been one of five members of the NZEF who were in Dublin during the Easter Rising 1916, co-opted to assist in the defence of Trinity College.The five were: 2/1745 Cpl A WDon; 3/1315 Pte J G Garland; 4/666 L-Cpl F H McLeod; 3/1347 Cpl F L Nevin; 12/1523 Pte E Waring.

    Admitted to hospital, Gallipoli, 25 July 1915; transferred by HS 'Gloucester Castle' to Malta, and admitted to St Andrew's Hospital, 29 July 1915; transferred to England, 16 October 1915, and admitted to Royal Victoria Hospital, Netley, 25 October 1915 (enteric); detached from NZ Convalescent Depot, Hornchurch, to NZ Reserve Group, Sling, 28 June 1916.
    Marched out from NZ Reserve Group, 30 June 1916, and attached on strength to NZ Engineers Details, Christchurch.
    Appointed Temporary Corporal, 9 July 1916; relinquished temporary appointment, 22 September 1916.
    Proceeded overseas to France, 22 September 1916; marched in to NZ Base Depot, Etaples, 23 September 1916; rejoined 2nd Field Company Engineers, in the field, 2 October 1916.
    To hospital, 28 November 1916; transferred to 14th General Hospital, Wimereux, 29 November 1916 (debility); to No 1 Convalescent Depot, 3 December 1916; to NZ Base Depot, Etaples, 7 December 1916.
    Detached to NZ Division, 21 April 1917.
    Admitted to No 2 NZ Field Ambulance, 22 April 1917 (diarrhoea); transferred to Divisional Rest Station, 25 April 1917; discharged to duty, 28 April 1917, and rejoined unit, in the field, same day.
    Wounded in action, 27 June 1917 (gassed), and admitted to No 3 NZ Field Ambulance; transferred to No 1 NZ Field Ambulance, 29 June 1917 (gassed: slight); to No 11 Casualty Clearing Station, 1 July 1917; to Ambulance Train No 21, 2 July 1917, and admitted to 54th General Hospital; transferred to England, 16 July 1917 (gas poisoning), and admitted to No 2 NZ General Hospital, Walton-on-Thames (bronchitis); discharged on furlough, 18 September 1917, to report to NZ Discharge Depot, Torquay, 9 October 1917.
    Classified 'unfit' by Medical Board, 25 September 1917, and placed on NZ Roll.
    Commenced return to New Zealand from Liverpool on board HMNZT 'Ruahine', 16 November 1917; discharged (no longer physically fit for War Service on account of illness contracted on Active Service), 5 February 1918.
