For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during an attack on African Trench, near Gouzeaucourt, on 12th September, 1918. He led his platoon forward and captured the objective in spite of strong enemy resistance. He organised his position for defence, but was forced to retire on his left flank owing to his supply of bombs running out. He formed a defensive flank, and, securing another supply of bombs, he led his party forward again, driving the enemy from the recaptured position. He established a block on the left flank an held out, despite two subsequent attacks by the enemy. Throughout he set a splendid example to his platoon.
