  • Embarked Egypt to join the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force, Gallipoli, 9 May 1915.
    Wunded in action (date not recorded) (superficial shrapnel wound, left shoulder).
    Admitted to NZ General Hospital, Cairo, 1 January 1916 (swelling of groin).
    Posted to 11th Battery, Moascar, 26 March 1916.
    Admitted to NZ General Hospital, 14 March 1916; transferred to No 1 NZ Stationary Hospital, 2 April 1916 (abscess, groin); transferred to NZ General Hospital, 5 April 1916; discharged to Base Depot, 15 April 1916.
    Commenced return to New Zealand from Suez on board HMNZT 'Ulimaroa', 11 June 1916; Medical report: 'In the early hours of the 4th. July he was found wandering about the ship in an aimless manner. Entered the Nurses' Quarters, frightened them, removed their clothing from the hooks in the cabin, and piled it in a heap in the alley way. He was taken charge of, appeared before the Colonel in the Orderly room, remanded for observation by the P.M.O., who recommended that he should be kept under restraint. On being removed from his quarters, became very violent, and on arrival at these quarters, proceeded to smash up the fittings, accomplished this feat successfully, and dumped the debris out of the port. A sedative was administered, became quieter and has remained in that condition ever since. Sedative discontinued after 24 hours. Still under guard. Recommend re-examination in New Zealand by Mental expert.'; discharged, 3 October 1916 (no longer physically fit for War Service on account of illness contracted on Active Service: neurasthenia).
