  • My father, Allan Lionel Alfred Field, was a farmer and soldier who served in the Pacific in World War II. He was named after two of his uncles: Lionel George Fougere, his mother's brother, and Alfred Thornley Field, his father's brother. Lionel died on the Somme, on 16th September 1916, the day after Alfred was also killed on the Somme. It would be nice to think that the two soldiers had met up in France before the battle, but we will never know. The subject was not discussed by my family, ever, and now those steadfast generations have passed away. I wish I could have found out more, in my younger years.
