  • Alfred Franke was the son of Mr. and Mrs. W. Franke, of Turakina Valley, Wanganui, New Zealand.

    Embarked Wellington, 2 May 1916; disembarked Suez, 22 June 1916.
    Embarked Alexandria, 26 July 1916; disembarked Southampton, England, 7 August 1916, and marched in to 5th Reserve Bn, Sling, and posted to D Company.
    Proceeded overseas to France, 28 August 1916; joined 2nd Bn, Auckland Infantry Regiment, in the field, 20 September 1916.
    Wounded in action, 25 September 1916 (gun shot wound, left hand); admitted to 11th Stationary Hospital, Rouen, 26 September 1916; transferred to No 2 Convalescent Depot, 27 September 1916; to Base Depot, Etaples, 1 October 1916; rejoined Bn, in the field, 12 October 1916.
    Admitted to No 2 NZ Field Ambulance, 15 July 1917 (pyrexia, unknown origin); transferred to 9th Australian Field Ambulance, 16 July 1917 (urticaria); transferred to Divisional Rest Camp, 23 July 1917; rejoined Bn, in the field, 24 July 1917.
    On leave to United Kingdom, 9 Septenmber 1917; rejoined Bn from leave, 22 September 1917.
    Detached to School of Instruction, 30 September 1917.
    Appointed Lance Corporal, 5 October 1917.
