He later purchased a portion of the Raumai estate and worked it in conjunction with Pukehou. He was regarded as one of the hardest workers in the district; at the same time he was always recognised as one of the most cheerful, though a great ‘stay at home.’ He enlisted as a private in the Medical Corps, and left this country with the 25th [sic] Reinforcements. In France, he was badly gassed on October 12th, 1917, succumbing two days later without gaining consciousness. Letters from the front speak of the excellent work he did under the most arduous conditions. He was buried at Remy military cemetery."
