  • Son of Henry Douglas Morpeth and Kate Morpeth, of Waihi

    Six brothers served in World War 1: Allan (18899) killed in 1917; George Douglas (44944); Gerald (12/416); Moore (12/1039) killed in 1915; Robert Nicoll (12/295) and Sloan (48797).

    The Auckland Museum Library's manuscripts collection holds a typescript of the diary and letters of Gerald Morpeth, compiled and transcribed by his son, Allan Philip Morpeth. [Ref. MS 2010/22]

    Gerald Morpeth – 1886-1960

    Gerald was one of 6 sons of Henry Douglas and Kate Morpeth of Waihi who enlisted from the Hauraki Regiment for WW1. The others were named Allan, George, Moore, Robert and Sloan. Both Allan and Moore were killed while overseas. Mr Douglas senior was the Town Clerk in Waihi for 16 years.

    The diaries and letters of Gerald’s service at Gallipoli have been compiled and transcribed by his son Allan Philip into a publication ‘The Waiheathens” held at Auckland War Memorial Museum Library filed under MS 2010/22.
