  • William Friar was the son of Matthew and Eleanor Friar, of Onehunga, Auckland, New Zealand.

    Went to Huntly Primary School. He won the King's Prize Rifle when he represented New Zealand at the Public School Cadet Empire Shooting Competition as a schoolboy cadet. The Lee Enfield 303 was presented to him by Field Marshal Lord Roberts. He also won the Lady Gwendolyn-Bisley Prize which was a pocket knife.

    Some H Company sailed on the Devon.
