      "Finding the line broken by a shell crater, when within 200 yards of the dressing station, he carried one of the men himself aided by a comrade. He had to be restrained from returning though completely exhausted, to bring in the remainder of the casualties & his conduct throughout was exceptionally splendid. He was wounded in the hip at an early stage of the operations." Under an intense bombardment he assisted to bring stretcher cases down by trolley to the advanced dressing station, on two occasions personally removing trucks that were blocking the line. Finding the line broken by a shell crater, when within 200 yards of the dressing station, he carried one of the men in himself, aided by a comrade. He had to be restrained from returning, though completely exhausted, to bring in the remainder of the casualties, and his conduct throughout was exceptionally splendid.
